FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE COTSWOLD SAVOYARDS
'Patience' was the first G&S opera (or should that be operetta? The exact nature of these pieces has always stimulated much debate) to be played at the Savoy Theatre. It was also the first time that Gilbert and Sullivan moved away from merely presenting a comic interpretation of the grand opera tradition. You'll notice far fewer recitatives and solo arias in 'Patience' than in "The Sorcerer', 'HMS Pinafore' or 'The Pirates of Penzance'.
The music is, in the main, more lyrical than operatic, although the Act I finale closes with one of Sullivan's most brilliant choral sections, skilfully built up for both orchestra and voices. In contrast, the comic numbers of Act II are among his most exhilarating and catchy and do full justice to one of Gilbert's most accomplished libretti.
BARRY WORDSWORTH
FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE C0TSWOLD SAVOYARDS
When WS Gilbert wrote the script for 'Patience', there could be no doubt that he was directly targeting the aesthetic movement which was at its height in the late 1800s. The satirists of the day lost no time in directing their attentions to the affectations and excesses that appeared to accompany the artistic movement and the likes of Oscar Wilde and his contemporaries. 'Patience' opened at The Opera Comique on 23rd April 1881 and it was an immediate success.
At first glance in the 21st century, 'Patience' would appear to be perhaps the most dated of the G&S operas, but how easily it has lent itself to the 1970s, as you are about to see for yourselves. The cast have had great fun in rehearsal, now it just remains for you to sit back and enjoy the results!
MARGARET CRAVEN
FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR
I first joined The Cotswold Savoyards in 1986 for 'The Gondoliers' and their return to The Everyman after its refurbishment. The following year I was very fortunate to be offered the part of Lady Saphir and thoroughly enjoyed playing her.
It has been a happy experience directing 'Patience' with lots of fun and hard work at rehearsals. We have a strong cast and chorus who have transformed themselves back to the 'flower power' era with their thoughts of love, peace, poetry and of course beautiful singing. Both cast and production team have been a joy to work with. All we ask is that you sit back and enjoy our efforts.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PLAYHOUSE
May I take this opportunity to welcome you to The Playhouse Theatre. To those patrons who have visited us before, welcome back. we are delighted to see you again.
The year 2000 saw changes at The Playhouse, with essential repairs carried out and a facelift given to the outside of the building. May I thank all those who contributed towards this project. Our fund raising, however, will not stop in 2001, as further repairs and renovations will be necessary over the next few years. We are completely self-reliant and so we are actively seeking sponsorship to enable us to continue.
This new season brings a variety of productions catering for all tastes and we hope, having enjoyed this evening, you will return. May you have an enjoyable experience here with us and if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to approach a member of the Front of House staff who will do their best to help.
